Audience: Effects theory

  1) Write a definition of a   passive  audience:  A concept that an audience takes in information presented by the media subconsciously. 2)  Write a definition of an  active  audience:  The view that audiences   consciously  chose what media they interact with. 3) Write a definition of the  hypodermic needle  theory:  The hypodermic theory is the idea that all audiences are passive and always understand the producers presented content which is often compared to being fed information. It also is thought of as though every person would react the same way to a simple piece of media, as if everyone is the same. 4) Write down a  media product  (e.g. TV show, newspaper or videogame)   for each category of Blumler and Katz's Uses and Gratifications theory and  WHY  it fits that particular audience use/gratification. The first one is done for you:  INFORMATION/SURVEILLANCE:  The Times newspaper  > Why: It tells audiences important information about politics, the world and more. PERSONA

Camera movement and editing

  1) Pick  three   aspects of  camera movement  in the Minority Report clip. Identify the  type  of camera movement and write about why the director chose to use that camera movement in the scene and what effect it has on the audience. In 0:37, the handheld shot from the newspaper with the mans face, to the man sitting opposite him on the train displays the character's distance between the public, represented in the news, and himself, seen sat opposite from them. At 0:53, the camera has a tilt which can show the characters hesitation before a person walks past the camera and the camera tilts lower but doesn't follow the him. This can communicate to the audience the tension of the scene and urgency of running away. 1:42, the camera pans around the group of people subtly. This shows the audience that anything too sudden can impact the consequences, also shown through the guard's armour. 2) Pick  two  aspects of  editing  in the Minority Report clip and write about what effect

Reception Theory

  1) What is the preferred reading of a media text? Agreeing with the message presented to the audience by the producers to influence their opinion 2) What is the oppositional reading of a media text? Disagreeing with the piece of media created by the producers or misinterpreting  the  message Re-watch the trailer for the film Harry Brown: 3) How does the Harry Brown trailer position the audience to respond to the teenage characters in the film? The trailer presents the teenage characters in the film to be violent and aggressive through gang violence and crime. This influences the audience to reflect that teenagers aren't to be trusted in the real life. 4) Why might young people reject this reading and construct an oppositional reading of the trailer? This may be because it paints teenagers as the same type of person without any qualities of a real person which can be misinterpreted by both older audiences applying this to younger people and younger people believing that it falsely
